When Jacqueline Bouvier married John F. Kennedy in 1953, she was a beautiful 24-year-old woman with a model-like physique and feminine, sophisticated sartorial taste. As her husband’s political career grew, so did her knack for dressing the part of a future first lady: Jackie became known for her classic, tailored suits and ladylike dresses, almost always in strong, solid colors that made a statement but didn’t shift the focus from her husband. Responsible for influencing the style of women across America in the sixties with signature pieces like the pillbox hat and later, oversize sunglasses, Jackie’s fashion has been celebrated with curated exhibits and copied by fans and designers many times over. Today, the outfits Jackie Kennedy wore — including many created for her by couturier Jean-Louis Scherrer — are still instantly recognizable. Most notably: the pink suit — a replica of a Chanel classic — she was wearing when President Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. See some of the style icon’s most famous looks, from her days as Jacqueline Bouvier, Jackie Kennedy, and finally, as Jackie Onassis.
