Last night’s WSJ. Innovator Awards were all about breaking new ground, so it seemed only right to poll guests on innovations they’ve contributed to the world. Answers ranged from cookie recipes (Karlie Kloss) to Instagrams (Constance Jablonski) to hairdos. “The top knot,” said model Jessica Hart. “I’ve been doing that for nine years now. I hate washing my hair, so I’d always just put my hair on top of my head. Now it’s this huge thing. But I really feel like I was the first.”
As the originator of the top knot, was she annoyed when it got trendy? “Yes! I was a little bit. And other people would claim that someone else had been the first person, and I was like, ‘There’s no way.’” Does her innovative top knot have any other special characteristics? “First of all, I do it myself. A lot of other people have it done. I think there’s an art form to it. One day I might do a video on how I do mine. I only do it with one hair band, no pins. I don’t think many other people could create the look with just one hair band.” Click through our slideshow to see other attendees’ personal breakthroughs (mundanity welcome!).

I think it's hard to be an innovator at 17, but I’m trying. Who do you think of an innovator? Oh, I think of groundbreaking rock stars and politicians. People that started whole movements -- Courtney Love, Barack Obama, that whole business.

Constance JablonskiDo you consider yourself to be an innovator? I don't know if I'm allowed to say that I’m an innovator, because I’m not a big artist or anything. But in a way, with social media, we're all innovators nowadays. Even just posting Instagram pictures: You post ideas, you post feelings, you share amazing things with people. We all influence each other. Are you into selfies? I only show what I want to show. You don't have to share everything. I'm not actually a big selfie person.

Derek Blasberg, Karlie KlossIn what way do you innovate? In a small way, I'm innovating with my cookies. I like to think outside the box to create something that tastes delicious but is also made of healthy ingredients. For me, that's innovating, in a sense. And I work with Christina Tosi from Momofuku Milk Bar, and she is an innovator and an artist in her own right. I have yet to disrupt an industry, but I will.

Gisele BündchenYou just got back on the runway after your second child. How did it feel? I gotta tell you, it's very different after you become a mom. Your priorities change so much. I'm still trying to find a balance between who I was in my job and who I am as a mom. I'm just so grateful to have the opportunity to do my job. I've been doing it for almost twenty years. I couldn’t be happier, because being a mom has always been my dream.
