Style Tribe: The First Ice Skaters of the Season Hit McCarren Park

McCarren Park in Williamsburg opened its long-awaited ice skating rink this weekend to the delight of the neighborhood. Despite 60-degree temperatures, melting ice, and long lines, skaters trekked to the rink from across the borough. The warm November light gave way to a string-bulb-lit night as figure skaters lapped the rink alongside first-timers, dads took the kids out for the day, girlfriends embraced the holidays, and a teenager celebrated his birthday. The Cut sent photographer Marisha Camp and reporter Katie Van Syckle to capture the beaucoup fur, flannel, and sparkles. Click through our slideshow to see the images.

How do you describe your style? Mostly I love glitter and hearts, and I like pink, purple, blue.

Michael Kobylinkski, 20, Ocean Parkway. How did you get this job? A friend found it on Craiglist for me. Yesterday was the grand opening so we started then.
What goes into the training? They just test you to see if you know how to skate, hockey stops.
How long is the shift? Today I start at 10 and I’m here until 4, so I guess 6 hours or 7 hours depending on the day.
And pretty good pay? No. But free ice skating. So I’m not complaining.
Do you have another job? I freelance — catering, construction, anything that pays, really.
Did you grown up skating? I used to go to Prospect Park.
And you were good enough to get the job? Yeah, I’m one of the top two skaters here.

When did you learn to skate? I was 4 when I learned to skate. When I was 5, I started to play hockey. And now I know how to stop, and my drills. Now I’m going to be in the game, and I’m getting my team.

Nicholas Cirillo, 31, and Kristin Cirillo, 30, a fashion blogger from Greenpoint. What were you thinking about when you got dressed to go skating? Kristin: We weren’t thinking anything. We discovered when we got to brunch we had the same shirt on.
What made you want to go skating? Kristin: We were passing by, and we were like, "Oh my God, ice skating, let’s go."

Is this her first time on skates? Sharon: Yeah. She didn’t do so well. She tried to walk, so she didn’t get the concept. But she can walk better now on land.
How did you pick out her outfit? She’s wearing a Harajuku Mini from Target jacket, Uniqlo leggings, and H&M socks.
Do you like to get her dressed up? I actually did style her because I was planning to take pictures on the rink.

Anna Drozda, 30, Bushwick. Where do you usually skate? I skate a lot at Bryant Park. It’s free and it’s really good ice. I also skate at City Ice in Long Island and Sky Rink in Chelsea. But we live in the neighborhood, so I’m really hoping to come here after work and double my practice time.
Would you describe yourself as a hobbyist? Yeah, I skated as a kid, I got up to the juvenile level, which meant I had double jumps. I quit when I was 13 and I’ve been back into it the last 2 or 3 years.

Where did you move from? Paige: I’m from Kentucky. Noel: I’m Virginia. We actually interned together at Milly and we stayed close friends.
What were you thinking about with your skating outfits? Paige: Wanted to be trendy, but holiday-ish that would look nice for the Rockettes later tonight and dinner.

Do you often dress them in matching outfits? Yeah, but I try to do different colors because they’re already close in resemblance. So I do different colors.
How often do you dress them similarly? Five days a week.

What are you wearing? Well I’ve had these necklaces for a really long time, I’m from New Orleans, and this the key to the house that I lost in Katrina, and this a medal from the school I graduated from.

How do you get your kids dressed? It depends on what mood they’re in, because colors kind of go with mood. I’ll actually allow them to pick their own stuff, and help them.
And I’ve noticed you and your daughter both have purple, is that intentional? Her and I dress similarly. I have a plaid shirt, so she has a plaid shirt under that sweater. There’s purple in my shirt so she wanted to put on a purple thing.
