Following last week’s announcement of Sundance’s 2014 lineup, yesterday the festival announced its crop of new films set to premiere this year, adding another David Cross project as well as films featuring Nick Offerman, Amy Poehler, Michael Cera, Chris O’Dowd, and more. The comedy selection ranges from dark to romantic to touring one-man show; take a look at some selections from the lineup below:
Hits – Directed and written by David Cross. In a small town in upstate New York, recklessness disturbs the lives of the people who dwell there as they wallow in unrealistic expectations. Cast: Julia Stiles, Michael Cera, Matt Walsh, Wyatt Cenac.
Frank – Directed by Lenny Abrahamson, written by Jon Ronson and Peter Straughan. A bizarre comedy about a wannabe musician who joins an avant garde rock band guided by a musical genius named Frank. Cast: Michael Fassbender, Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Laggies – Directed by Lynn Shelton, written by Andrea Seigel. A coming-of-age story, which follows a 28-year-old woman who can’t seem to grow up. Cast: Keira Knightley, Sam Rockwell, Chloe Grace Moretz, Mark Webber.
Calvary – Directed and written by by John Michael McDonagh. A black comedic drama about a priest whose life is threatened following a confession. Cast: Brendan Gleeson, Chris O’Dowd, Kelly Reilly.
Nick Offerman: American Ham – Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, written by Nick Offerman. Offerman in a one-man show at New York’s historic Town Hall theaters features music and anecdotes on oral sex techniques.
They Came Together – Directed by David Wain, written by Michael Showalter and David Wain. Set in New York, this spoof on the romantic comedy follows an overtly Jewish man and a clumsy leading lady as they fall head over heels. Cast: Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, Ed Helms, Max Greenfield.
