The New York Post ran a brief interview with SNL head writer and not-so-well-received Weekend Update anchor Colin Jost over the weekend, and aside all but confirming that he’s set to return to the Update desk next season, he addressed some of the criticism that’s come his way since he joined the cast back in March.
On juggling the Update gig with his job as head writer:
Even when you have two or three [new people], it’s challenging. You want to learn their voices so you can write for [them]. When you have so many people … you don’t get as much time to spend with the actors.
On his Update performance last season:
I don’t feel like what I’ve done so far is a full realization of who I am. There’s a lot to figure out in the beginning, and your personality starts coming out the more you do it.
Jost went on to tell the Post that “viewers will see more of who he really is†in the fall and cited the brief “Breaking Nudes†gag from May’s Charlize Theron episode as an example of where he wants to take the segment next season. While it’s true that the influx of new cast members meant more work for Jost last year, plenty of SNL players don’t get to show viewers the “full realization†of who they are during their run. In any case, hold your dreams for a return to a female Update duo or Beck Bennett meeting his ultimate SNL destiny for a little while longer, because it sounds like Jost already has his plans lined up for the fall.
