Another Maya Rudolph variety special — or even a series — could be in the works at NBC. The network always described last May’s special as a sort of backdoor pilot, but after it aired, execs didn’t say much publicly about whether the ratings were good enough to warrant more Maya. But talking to reporters Sunday at the TV Critics Association press tour in L.A., NBC Entertainment boss Robert Greenblatt said he was “very encouraged†by the Nielsen numbers, while the Peacock’s unscripted boss, Paul Telegdy, said “active discussions†were taking place about whether and how to move forward with a Rudolph variety franchise. While none of this means NBC is ready to greenlight our ultimate wish — i.e., a weekly The Maya Rudolph Show — the dream of Rudolph on the regular remains alive. We’ll GIF to that.
