‘Last Week Tonight’ Explains Why Working Mothers Have It the Worst

To celebrate Mother’s Day, last night’s Last Week Tonight took a closer look at the many American companies and lawmakers who claim to love and support mothers but don’t support paid maternity leave in the US, which is one of only two countries in the world to not provide paid time off for new mothers. “You can’t go on and on about how much you love mothers,� John Oliver says, “and then fail to support legislation that makes life easier for them.� After playing a bunch of mushy Mother’s Day ads, Oliver debuted a brand new ad made by Last Week Tonight that celebrates mothers without confusing them into thinking that means it supports maternity leave: “This Mother’s Day, we have just one thing to say to say to all the mothers out there: Get the fuck back to work.�
