Bill Murray Made a ‘Ghostbusters’ Cameo Because Wiig and McCarthy Are ‘Tough to Say No To’

Despite his history of not wanting any involvement in a new Ghostbusters film, earlier this month it was revealed that Bill Murray will, in fact, have a cameo in Paul Feig’s upcoming reboot. Vulture recently asked Murray why he chose to make the cameo, and it turns out we can ultimately thank the “great hope†that is Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, who Murray says were “touch to say no to.†He also didn’t want his lack of involvement to shine a negative light on the new film:

That’s not to say that Murray’s reversal came easily. “I thought about it for a very long time,†he said. “Like, many, many months. No, that’s not right. I was seriously thinking about this for years, really … It kept eating at me, and I really respect those girls. And then I started to feel like if I didn’t do this movie, maybe somebody would write a bad review or something, thinking there was some sort of disapproval [on my part].â€

Murray also told Vulture what it was like to film his cameo alongside Wiig, McCarthy, McKinnon, and Jones: “You know, they were incredibly nice to ask me, and I really enjoyed being there,†he said. “I didn’t want to overshadow [them] or anything, and I feel really good about it.†Ghostbusters is slated to hit theaters in July 2016.
