Between Kanye Westannouncing his 2020 presidential candidacy and Nicki Minaj calling out Miley Cyrus, the 2015 VMAs involved enough made-for-Twitter moments to eclipse any conversation about the red carpet. But it’s not as if the red carpet was boring — this was the year, after all, that MTV asked Jeremy Scott, who knows a thing or two about spectacle, to redesign the show’s signature Moon Man trophy. Scott might be exactly the man to represent the show’s nexus of high fashion and high absurdity, the place on the Venn diagram where Hailee Steinfeld’s sophisticated Stella McCartney pantsuit overlaps with Miley Cyrus’s vagina chandelier.
For your after-the-show pleasure, we’ve rounded up the best, worst, and most flat-out silly looks from last night’s arrivals. Find them all in the slideshow below.

Most Riot Grrrl Amber Rose and ensemble envoked the feminist punk movement's trope of reclaiming words like bitch and slut by wearing them proudly on their bodies. (Here's Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill doing roughly the same thing in a time before Twitter.)

Most Emo His fans might not like it, but Justin Bieber's scene-kid new haircut clearly says something about his current sensitive mood: He went on to cry during his performance. And who doesn't love a rebel in a leather jacket who's not afraid to shed a few tears?

Best Denim-on-Denim Couple Think Britney and Justin (or Katy and Riff Raff), with a “Farmer in the Dell” twist. Pharrell, always allergic to red-carpet status quo, opted for a T-shirt and double denim, while his wife, Helen Lasichanh, matched him in a denim shirt and overalls — a way to do couples coordination without being overly cute about it.

Least VMAs-Ready Selena Gomez, in Calvin Klein Collection, and Demi Lovato, in Nicolas Jebran, may no longer be BFFs, but their style seems very much in synch. Gomez’s covered-up black gown and Lovato’s boxy V-neck (Twitter unkindly compared it to a tire) felt too stuffy for the occasion. Guys, you have fun, sexy summer songs out — dress like it!

Best Test Pattern From Moon Men to Moschino, Jeremy Scott can do it all — and that includes designing himself a snazzy rainbow tux and tails, in his signature test-pattern print.
