The second film in the popular dystopian YA series The Maze Runner won the weekend box office, taking in $30.3 million and just beating out Black Mass. The Johnny Depp vehicle, in which Depp portrays with chilling histrionics the infamous Boston gangster James “Whitey†Bulger, earned early buzz for Depp’s “comeback†performance (whatever “comeback†even means anymore), though it earned bleh reviews this weekend. It made $23.3 million opening weekend, with an irregularly high 10 percent of the grosses coming from Boston, where the film is set. (Boston tends to account for 2.7 percent of movie grosses, on average.)
M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit, similarly touted as his “comeback,†continues to perform well, adding $11.3 million to its now-$42.3 million cume, just edging out last week’s box-office winner, The Perfect Guy, which made $9.6 million for a $41.3 million total. Everest rounds out the top five with a disappointing $7.5 million opening-weekend haul. Tom Cruise has finally been knocked out of the top five after clinging there for eight weeks. Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation made $2.2 million. The Emily Blunt–starring crime thriller Sicario, which opened on six screens, made $390,000.
