“See it in glorious 70mm,†the advertisements for Quentin Tarantino’s three-hour epic The Hateful Eight instruct. As Tarantino has said, over and over, his western-cum-Grand Guignol was shot on 70mm, and is playing an exclusive roadshow across the country where the only theaters that will show the film will be those equipped with 70mm projectors, which are increasingly rare in this digital age. Now, it appears The Hateful Eight has received so much attention for its progenitor’s celluloid devotion that another film is following suit. And it’s not a film you’d expect: Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman may screen in 70mm, Screencrush reports. Akin to Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, Snyder’s film was partially shot in IMAX, which has an incredibly high resolution, and can be shot (and projected) digitally or on film. Batman v Superman was, according to IMDb, shot with both digital and film cameras, with some scenes filmed in IMAX (like Nolan’s The Dark Knight). Since the latest release to screen on 70mm was Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master in 2012, this is exciting news for the fervid niche of film fans who have been longing for such cinematic events. Now we can see two superheroes destroy cities in glorious 70mm.
