Los Angeles Film Critics Give Spotlight Top Honors; Mad Max Makes a Strong Showing

The race is on. Photo: Kerry Hayes/Open Road Films

We’ve gotten this far into the awards season and we’re yet to get a front-runner for most of the major prizes. Last week, Carol made a strong showing at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards — winning best film, director, screenplay, and cinematography. But it seems that tastes differ between coasts, as the Los Angeles Film Critics Association cast their votes in favor of Spotlight, giving it awards for best picture and screenplay, and Mad Max: Fury Road, for director, cinematography, and production design. The L.A. critics also went their own way in the acting categories, making choices entirely distinct from those made by the New York Film Critics Circle, including wins for Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) and Charlotte Rampling (45 Years). It’s going to be an exciting awards season. See below for the full list of winners and runners-up.
