Lupita Nyong’o has joined David Oyelowo and George Clooney in speaking out about the Oscars, which, for the second year in a row, have produced an all-white slate of acting nominations. “I am disappointed by the lack of inclusion in this year’s Academy Awards nominations,†wrote Nyong’o, the last black actor to win an Oscar (that’s last as in “most recent,†but who’s to say?), on her Instagram account. “It has me thinking about unconscious prejudice and what merits prestige in our culture. The Awards should not dictate the terms of art in our modern society, but rather be a diverse reflection of the best of what our art has to offer today. I stand with my peers who are calling for change in expanding the stories that are told and recognition of the people who tell them.†See that, Oscars? You’ve disappointed Lupita Nyong’o, one of the finest humans this world has ever produced, a person we should all be devoting our lives to making happy. Why would you do something like that?
