The original video for Usher’s “Chains,†featuring Nas and Bibi Bourelly, forced you to stare into the eyes of the black lives lost to police brutality. Its newest version has Usher imagining himself as one of them. It’s a powerful statement: that Usher, one of the most famous black men on the planet, is just as helpless as the next black man in the backseat of a cop car. He envisions himself as just another victim, walking in on his own funeral, childhood pictures adorning the casket. It’s a disturbing, exaggerated point — but a necessary one nonetheless. And like the original, you don’t have to be signed up to Tidal to experience it.
