While visiting MSNBC’s All In With Chris Hayes Monday night, prominent Bernie Sanders surrogate Susan Sarandon discussed the question on everyone’s minds this primary season: If Hillary Clinton wins the Democratic nomination, should Sanders’s supporters vote for her, or should they go “Bernie or Bust (They should vote for her.) “I think a lot of people are like, Sorry, I just can’t bring myself to vote for [Clinton],†Sarandon said. Hmm. Even if it comes down to backing her versus Donald Trump, a man who is almost literally a fascist? “Some people feel that Donald Trump will bring the revolution immediately if he gets in,†Sarandon argued. “Things will really explode.†As Hayes noted, it’s a version of the classic Marxist “sharpen the contradictions†argument, which calls for instilling short-term pain in order to bring about systemic change. This has a poor track record of actually working, but as Sarandon says, the status quo isn’t working, either: “It’s dangerous to think that we can continue the way we are.†Sanders himself has argued that all Democrats should vote for the eventual Democratic nominee, whomever it is.
