Ted Cruz Quoted Michael Douglas in The American President, Because This Presidential Race Is Basically Like a Movie, Anyway

If dragging prospective first ladies Melania Trump and Heidi Cruz into the Republican presidential race reminded you of the 1995 Rob Reiner film The American President, congratulations! You’re thinking just like Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz! Tuesday night, Donald Trump tweeted — and then quickly edited — a threat that he would “spill the beans†about Cruz’s wife. Wednesday morning, the junior senator from Texas clapped back by quoting Michael Douglas from The American President, saying, “If Donald wants to get into a character fight, he’s better off sticking with me, cuz Heidi’s way out of his league.â€

Free Beacon’s Lachlan Markay pointed out the similarity and cut together a side-by-side video on Twitter:

In the film, Senator Bob Rumson (played by Richard Dreyfuss) attacks the president’s lobbyist-lover Sydney Ellen Wade, played by Annette Bening, which is what prompts Douglas’s President Andrew Shepherd to say those words. It turns out Aaron Sorkin does know how to write for Republicans.
