Kendrick Lamar and Top Dawg Entertainment might be in copyright trouble for the 2009 song, “I Do This.†According to a complaint filed in L.A. federal court Thursday, the Compton-bred artist allegedly rapped over a “direct and complete copy†of Bill Withers’s “Don’t You Want to Stay†music, without proper permission. The lawsuit comes from Mattie Music Group, copyright owners of Withers’s songwriting catalog, and they contend that Lamar copied and sampled material “with a thumb to the nose, catch me if you can attitude.†Reuters reports that the plaintiffs want to recoup unspecified damages, and that the suit has been filed in the same court that awarded Marvin Gaye’s family more than $7 million for the “Blurred Lines†trial.
