Gael García Bernal will play Zorro in the character’s long-in-development reboot after all: Deadline reports that the Mozart in the Jungle actor, who has been attached to the idea off and on the last few years, has boarded Jonás Cuarón’s version of Z. Lantica Media and Sobini Films are now backing the flick, which places the masked swordsman in the near future. Other plot and talent details have yet to be released. “I have always loved Gael for this role,” said Mark Amin, one of the project’s producers, tied to the announcement. “Zorro is a hero who is charming, witty and clever. Gael possesses all those characteristic and he’s able to deliver them with a modern spin to introduce the Zorro character to a new audience.”

Cuarón will direct from his own script, with García Bernal and Co. slated to start production later this year at the Pinewood Dominican Republic studios. The Monday update entails a quick reunion for the pair, as Cuarón’s Desierto, which stars García Bernal, comes out later this year. “I’ve never done a big studio movie like [Zorro],” García Bernal told Vulture in 2013, when the idea was over at Fox. “So I’m kind of curious to see what it is like. It looks kind of fun. Why not?”
