Ellen Page and Kate Mara Will Embark on a Forbidden Romance for the Drama Mercy

We will always have to wonder what could have been if True Detective season two had made the smart play and ran with Funny or Die’s Tiny Detectives premise, but if you’ve wanted to know what a movie would look like with Ellen Page and Kate Mara playing co-leads, then your time has come. Variety reports that the two tiniest gumshoes will play embattled love interests in the drama Mercy, which will be directed by Israeli filmmaker Tali Shalom Ezer. Ezer’s previous film, Princess, premiered with strong reviews at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, and the level of drama in Mercy should be on par with the kind of emotionally fraught roles Page has pursued of late. She will play Lucy, a woman whose dad is on death row and who gets romantically entangled with Mara’s character, Mercy. The catch comes in the fact that Mercy is, as Variety puts it, “a woman on the opposing side of her family’s political cause.†So it’s got a queer couple in a relationship that might be torn asunder by family and political interests and there’s a man on death row. Page has said she is committed right now to taking roles that support women and gay characters, but hopefully, at some point, one of those gay characters can have a happy ending. Or at least be in a romantic comedy.
