Since Jon Stewart exited ‘The Daily Show’ late last year, he’s been sorely missed by fans who spent 17 years ending their days with the beloved comic-turned-pundit. After leaving Comedy Central, he immediately inked a four-year deal with HBO, reassuring us that he’d be back sometime, somehow – and now, following an announcement from HBO programming president Casey Bloys at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, we finally have details on Stewart’s next big project: an animated series parodying cable news.
According to Bloys, the series is just the start, with Stewart “establishing an animation studioâ€Â to support the project. “The idea is it will be an animated parody of a cable news network with an Onion-like portal,†Bloys said, with short-form content online that’s also tied into a longer-form TV show. Apparently, he could begin releasing content as soon as September or October.
For nearly two decades, Stewart served as a leading (and for some younger viewers, the only) source of progressively-focused political news, presenting humorous, candid, and often truly outraged takes on everything from election cycles to deep dish pizza. While he’s barely been off the air, Stewart’s informed and honest voice has been missed, especially in this increasingly insane election year (as evidenced by his well-received recent takeover of former ‘Daily Show’ correspondent Stephen Colbert’s ‘Late Show’ desk), so we’re looking forward to seeing how he lends his distinct voice to his highly anticipated next project.
