What is the nature of truth? Is it found in the vile and base reality that surrounds us — a world of fornication, decay, and overwhelming and collective murder? Or can we reach further to find an ecstatic truth that speaks to us in the deeper reaches of our mind? Werner Herzog thinks we should, which is why he tells the Daily Beast he is in awe of Kanye West’s “Famous†music video, which presents naked doppelgängers of celebrities like Donald Trump, Rihanna, and Taylor Swift sleeping together, like figures out of a cheap suburban novel. But Herzog doesn’t see anything erotic about it. “I see something rarefied here which is essential in real, deep storytelling,†he explains, praising its “separate parallel story that only occurs in the connective mind of the subject.†Herzog explains that the video reminds him of his own experiences on the internet: “There’s a lot of doppelgängers pretending to be me, trying to speak in my accent, my voice.†Oops.
