It’s no secret that female artists are vastly underrepresented in the art world. When it came out, in 2010, the Museum of Modern Art’s Modern Women: Women Artists at the Museum of Modern Art was the first publication by a major North American museum highlighting the work by modern and contemporary female artists. All together now: finally.
Now being reprinted by the museum, the book is a compilation of essays by nearly 50 writers on the works of female artists spanning Early Modernism to Contemporary art — from being a woman in the Bauhaus to performance art. Artists include Frida Kahlo, Diane Arbus, and Nan Goldin. Click ahead to see Oppenheim’s furry teacups, Simpson’s wigs, and Kahlo’s pixie-cut portrait.
