At the end of September, the estranged husband of Jim Carrey’s ex-girlfriend, Cathriona White, filed a wrongful-death suit against the actor. White committed suicide in December of last year, and her husband, Mark Burton, claims that Carrey is responsible for providing the prescription drugs that she used to take her life. The name Arthur King was found on the bottles near White’s body, and Burton is alleging that the name is an alias used by Carrey. According to the Los Angeles Times, White’s mother, Brigid Sweetman, filed her own wrongful-death suit against Carrey today, with the paper reporting that White “contracted three sexually transmitted diseases from Carrey without warning and that her daughter’s suicide was a result of her diagnosis and the illegally-obtained prescription medication she received from the actor.â€

Carrey maintains that the prescriptions White ingested were stolen from him. In response to Sweetman’s claims of his client’s wrongful death liability, Carrey’s lawyer issued a statement implicating Sweetman’s “contentious relationship†with her daughter as a more likely contributing factor in White’s suicide. He also said, “In directing her grief and rage at Jim Carrey and joining this ridiculous lawyer’s attempt to capitalize on Cathriona’s suicide, Mrs. Sweetman is heading down the same dark path as Cathriona’s green card ‘husband,’ Mark Burton.â€
