“Sunlight is the best disinfectant,†Bill Maher smugly told the New York Times this week, taking credit for bringing down infamous alt-right troll Milo Yiannopoulos. According to Maher, Yiannopoulos became a persona non grata because of his controversial Real Time appearance, not the unearthed footage of Yiannopoulos’s comments in which he appears to condone pedophilia. Now, Maher’s own comments on illicit relationships are getting attention: Recently unearthed footage from Maher’s old ABC show Politically Incorrect features the host defending Mary Kay Letourneau, the teacher convicted of having sex with a then-12-year-old student. “I admit it’s unorthodox. She’s 35, the boy is 14,†Maher says in the clip. “He was younger when they started. But she is pregnant again … They are keeping the mother in jail because she won’t conform to what society feels should be the perfect American family.†Not quite, but lucky for Maher, this video is getting its time in the sunlight.
