Despite Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel’s attempts to get a rapid Twitter response from President Trump during Sunday’s award show, the commander-in-chief saved his review for an interview on Monday with Breitbart News. Though the 89th annual Academy Awards was less political than several of the other award shows this year (looking at you, “overrated†Meryl Streep at the Golden Globes), the president still believes that it was too concerned about him and America’s current government. He told the conservative website:
“I think they were focused so hard on politics that they didn’t get the act together at the end. It was a little sad. It took away from the glamour of the Oscars. It didn’t feel like a very glamorous evening. I’ve been to the Oscars. There was something very special missing, and then to end that way was sad.â€
So there’s the real explanation for last night’s snafu: Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway suffered the indignity of accidentally announcing La La Land as the Best Picture winner instead of Moonlight because the person who gave them the winner card was too busy writing their local congressman about the Affordable Care Act.
Of course, the critique didn’t end there. Though we will have to wait until Tuesday to see Trump’s interview with Fox & Friends, Deadline reports that during the televised chat that the president also accuses Kimmel of “pulling out the race card.†During the monologue the host said, “I want to say thank you to Donald Trump, I mean, remember last year when it seemed like the Oscars were racist? It’s gone. Thanks to him!†Trump wants to remind viewers that compared to other Republicans he did well among Latinos and African-American voters, because it’s still somehow all about the election.
