Five directors committed themselves to the United States’ propaganda efforts during World War II, and Netflix’s new documentary corrals five modern-day masters to tell their stories. In the trailer for Five Came Back, Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Guillermo del Toro, Paul Greengrass, and Lawrence Kasdan gather to tell the stories of John Ford, William Wyler, John Huston, Frank Capra, and George Stevens. Based on Vulture contributor Mark Harris’s book of the same name, the documentary tracks Hollywood’s impact on the war effort and vice versa, including how each Old Hollywood director wrestled with World War II and their movies’ place in it. Netflix will also present 13 documentaries discussed in the series, including Ford’s The Battle of Midway, Wyler’s The Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress, Huston’s Report From the Aleutians, Capra’s The Battle of Russia, Stevens’s Nazi Concentration Camps, and Stuart Heisler’s The Negro Soldier, according to Deadline.
