PricewaterhouseCoopers, the accounting firm that tallies the Oscar votes, has issued an apology for the ceremony’s last-minute Best Picture mix-up. After Warren Beatty was handed the wrong envelope and Faye Dunaway announced the wrong winner, a man with a headset rushed onstage to correct the presenting error. “We sincerely apologize to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and the Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture,†the accounting firm said in a statement. “The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred. We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation.†PricewaterhouseCoopers has handled Academy ballots for 83 years; this is the first time a mistake of this magnitude has rocked the ceremony.
