In very timely movie news, Variety reports that Meryl Streep has joined a new Steven Spielberg movie meant to remind us how essential the Fourth Estate is to a functioning democracy. The Post will star Streep as legendary Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham and Tom Hanks as the paper’s editor, Ben Bradlee. The duo was in charge in 1971 when the paper published a series of articles based on the Pentagon Papers, a secret study commissioned by the Department of Defense that detailed U.S. involvement in Vietnam over the course of 20 years. Stacked with Hollywood alpha liberals, the project stands out at this historical moment for being a perfect hero story for liberals wary of a president who views the press as an “enemy of the American people.†And judging by photos of the late Graham, The Post should also please people who miss Meryl’s well-coiffed look in The Iron Lady.
