Here’s a clip from last night’s Last Week Tonight, where John Oliver takes a closer look at the upcoming French presidential election and the rising popularity of the very Trump-like candidate Marine Le Pen. “One of the frustrating things about watching this unfold from America is this feels a little like déjà vu: a potentially destabilizing populist campaigning on anti-immigrant rhetoric who rages against the elites despite having a powerful father and inherited wealth, even as all the experts reassure us that there is no way that this can possibly happen,†Oliver says before noting that polls are predicting a very low voter turnout and pleading to French voters, French bistro-style, to show up at the polls and not follow suit with the US electing Trump as well as the Brexit vote. “You in France love nothing more than acting like you are better than Britain and America. Well, now is your chance to prove that,†Oliver says. “Because we made populist, nativist choices with Brexit and Trump, and to be honest, it’s not working out so great for us so far, and now you have a populist, nativist choice of your own. And just imagine how superior you can feel if you don’t make the same mistake that we did.â€
