Thereâs a reason Richard Gere is sticking to indie fare these days: He has to. After spending years as one of Hollywoodâs most famous leading men, heâs been sidelined from bigger studio projects, and he says itâs because of his stance on Tibet. âThere are definitely movies that I canât be in because the Chinese will say, âNot with him,ââ Gere told The Hollywood Reporter. âI recently had an episode where someone said they could not finance a film with me because it would upset the Chinese.â China is a power player in Hollywood â âYou Canât Make Movies Without China,â The Wall Street Journal declared this week â with the countryâs $6.6 billion box-office total last year second only to the United Statesâ. With Chinaâs tight hold on big studioâs purse strings, Gere is now busy with two small budget features: Sony Pictures Classicsâ Norman and the Orchardâs The Dinner. The Pretty Woman star says heâs not itching for big blockbusters anyway â first of all he has enough money (âPage Sixâ reported heâs worth an estimated $45 million), and second of all, in his words, âIâm not interested in playing the wizened Jedi in your tentpole.â So there you have it.
