With 3 Generations — what may well be the first mainstream comedy feature film about a transgender teen in transition — the Weinstein Company has their hands full. The film has garnered some negative attention, mainly for having a cisgender woman (Elle Fanning) portray a transgender teen boy named Ray. In its first trailer, the long-delayed film takes a light tone, engaging with Ray’s story and the family of women around him (Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon) with a somewhat winking, distinctly New York sensibility. As Harvey Weinstein fights the film’s R-rating, take a look and see if you’re willing to go along for the ride, controversies be damned.
