Tiffany Haddish auditioned for Saturday Night Live three times before the Girls Trip star was asked to host. “I was super grateful to be there in that capacity, as opposed to as a regular performer. To be a host is a super big honor. I couldn’t believe I was the first black woman comedian to do it,†Haddish told the New York Times about her SNL episode, which introduced us to the inimitable Boo Boo Jeffries. “I Googled and saw that Whoopi Goldberg had been on it, so I reached out to her.†To Haddish’s surprise, Whoopi had only done a single SNL sketch. Her advice: “You the first, bitch, you better do a good job.â€
To no one’s surprise, she did. Haddish’s monologue addressed Hollywood sexual harassment — “If you’ve got your thing out, and she’s got all her clothes on, you’re in the wrong†— which she says she’s dealt with in the past. Her secret: “I always make fun of the guy. I make it a joke,†she told the Times. “Most of the time they get scared. And I let everyone know I’m a tattletale. That I will snitch. That might be why it took me so long to get where I’m at now.â€
