Though it may have burnt out on Broadway in the wake of a casting controversy last September, Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 will soon reappear overseas. The boundary-pushing musical is getting a new life in Tokyo starting January 2019 thanks to production company Toho. According to Variety, there are also discussions of productions in London and Korea, as well as interest in China and the Philippines. The original Broadway run of The Great Comet closed before it could recoup more than 20 percent of its more than $12 million capitalization, so these international productions would allow investors to slowly recover more of that investment. There are also plans for a national tour of sorts, though it is reportedly likely to take the form of a series of longer sit-down runs in various cities. Given the musical’s trademark site-specific staging, it’s also easier for the show to find venues, Variety notes, as it could be performed in a nightclub, a tent, or your apartment right now.
