Don’t Jump Out of a Car, But Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird Cinematic Universe Isn’t Happening Anytime Soon

Earlier this year, Oscar-nominated Lady Bird director Greta Gerwig revealed that she wants to make three additional films about Sacramento, but we may have to wait a while for more details. Speaking at the Time 100 gala on Tuesday night, Gerwig — one of the evening’s honorees — told Vulture that she likes to keep her not-quite-finished scripts under wraps.

“I can’t tell you ideas because as soon as I say ideas to the world, they die. Somehow they become not interesting to me anymore, so I kind of have to keep them safe until I’m ready to do it,†said Gerwig, who wants to build the Lady Bird cinematic universe over a long period of time. “Plus, I think when you’re figuring something out if you get feedback too early it can make you doubt what you’re trying to do.â€

After finishing a draft, Gerwig and a trusted group of readers workshop the script until its done. “By then, I’ve stopped negotiating what the movie will be, and it just exists.â€

Although this process works to limit unnecessary criticism, it does take up time. Gerwig mused that it would be nice to do a smaller work where she could get comments back right away. “Maybe I’ll make a short film or something.â€
