This Month’s Highlights
Black Panther
Yes, that’s right, it’s one of those rare instances in which one of the most critically and commercially successful movies of the year — a movie that just about everyone wants to be on Netflix — actually gets added to Netflix in the same year of its theatrical release. And who knows, the Marvel film might even become an Oscar winner. Rewatch it now and make it happen, Academy members! Arrives September 4.
American Vandal season 2
The biggest question of September is this: Can American Vandal top its Peabody Award–winning first season? Remember that? This brilliant true-crime mockumentary about spray-painted dicks won a damn Peabody. American Vandal is incredible, and this month, it’s finally back, with a case just as vulgar, and far more gross. This time, your favorite high-school documentarians are on the trail of the Turd Burglar, a prankster who drugged a Catholic school cafeteria, causing violent, simultaneous case of mass diarrhea, dubbed “The Brownout.†This is going to be a ride. Arrives September 14.
BoJack Horseman season five
Entering its fifth season, BoJack Horseman is in an exciting place, where it feels like it could be a show about literally anything. All of its characters — Diane, Mr. Peanutbutter, Todd, and Princess Caroline — have, over the past four seasons, been fleshed out with tremendous nuance and wit. If you’re all caught up with BoJack, you’re at a place where you know the show’s cast, and because of that, BoJack can go deeper than it ever did before — and there’s lots to plumb, as Todd continues to explore life as an asexual man, Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter navigate the aftermath of their breakup, and BoJack copes with the knowledge that he has a daughter out there. But you know it’ll be funny, too. Arrives September 14.
The Dragon Prince
Any serious discussion about the best TV shows of the last 20 years should at least consider Avatar: The Last Airbender. A charming, thoughtful, and action-packed animated series about warring fantasy nations that was never condescending and always deeply humane, Avatar was rewarding, thrilling television. The Dragon Prince hopes to continue in that tradition. Co-created by Aaron Ehasz, head writer on Avatar, and Justin Richmond, The Dragon Prince follows two brothers, Callum and Ezran, who form an unlikely partnership with an assassin sent to murder them in an effort to end a war. Details are still scant, but it looks to be a sweeping fantasy that’s both emotionally mature and just bright enough for children. Keep an eye out for this one. Arrives September 14.
