This Is What a Sustainable Red Carpet Looks Like

The biggest names and faces in fashion tried on sustainability for a night at the Green Carpet Fashion Awards to wrap up Milan Fashion Week. The event is the brainchild of Livia Firth’s Eco-Age, a consultancy group that collaborates with designers on ways they can be more eco-friendly. Designers including Prada and Gucci created fully sustainable evening looks for the event, made from recycled textiles or innovative ones. Among the designs represented was a custom Miu Miu dress made for Alison Brie from certified organic duchesse silk and lead-free crystals from Swarovski. Brie told the Cut, “At the Eco Awards, designers are proving that you don’t have to suffer style for sustainability. Even very high end, luxury brands are capable of eco-friendly design.” For everyday sustainability, she’s a fan of the Reformation.

Firth, the host for the night, chose to go with the most sustainable route and wore vintage. Icon of suiting Cate Blanchett, who presented the Eco Stewardship award, wore Stella McCartney. Even Anna Wintour joined her son-in-law Francesco Carrozzini on the red carpet, perhaps showing support for Carrozzini’s latest project, a VR experience showing the dark side of the fashion industry (namely the poverty it can create and environmental havoc it can wreck).
