Humberto Leon Made His Directorial Debut at Kenzo’s The Everything Premiere
Yesterday evening, KENZO co-creative director (and Opening Ceremony founder) Humberto Leon celebrated his directorial debut at a screening of The Everything in the East Village. The short follows a family of teens with unusual superpowers inspired by Leon’s own daydreams. In a Q&A following the screening, Leon admitted that he had thought of directing a film for over a decade, and that the bulk of the film was written during a flight. He credited both his co-creative director Carol Lim, as well as the cast and his acquaintances in the arts, for shaping the final work with their input.
“One of the things that was most exciting is having asked the actors and actresses in the film about what their roles meant and what their contributions meant,” said Leon, explaining how he approached the creative process throughout filming. “I really love to collaborate, and I collaborated with each and every one of them. They brought their own spirit into the roles. That’s the way I love to work.”
Following the screening, guests celebrated alongside Leon, Lin, and the short film’s star, Milla Jovovich. Celebrity guests among the crowd included Justin Theroux, Hayley Kiyoko, Francia Raisa, Sasha Velour, and Soo Joo Park.
The New York Fashion Week release date was no coincidence; the cast was costumed in KENZO’s autumn/winter 2018 collection, Memento N°3.
