156 Designers Share Their Fall/Winter Inspirations

It’s that time! To kick off New York Fashion Week, the Cut asked 156 designers to choose just one word and one image to describe their new collections — giving us a mood-board preview of what we’ll see on the runways this season. Some turned to nature for their fall/winter 2019 collections, including Carolina Herrera, Mansur Gavriel, and Rebecca Minkoff. Veronica Beard is very good at puns and invented the word hautedoors, defined as: “an elegantly attired woman who suddenly finds herself in the middle of the mountains on a camping trip.”
Other designers like Oscar de la Renta looked to specific times and places, from Spain’s Alhambra palace to New York City in the 1960s.
