Today, the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment announced that for the third year in a row, New Yorkers will come together for One Book, One New York. Throughout the month of April, New Yorkers can participate in the country’s largest reading program by checking out this year’s five nominated books and voting for one of them to be the subject of a citywide book club this summer. As in past years, all five books will represent the diversity of stories and perspectives that characterize the city, and this year, all five books are written by women authors. Starting April 1, you can vote online for one of the following nominees:
- A Place for Us, by Fatima Farheen Mirza
- Nilda, by Nicholasa Mohr
- Just Kids, by Patti Smith
- Another Brooklyn, by Jacqueline Woodson
- Free Food for Millionaires, by Min Jin Lee
On April 23, four of the authors and Nicholasa Mohr’s son David Mohr will gather for a special event panel at the NYPL’s Celeste Bartos Forum. The winning book will be announced on May 10 as part of the Pen America World Voices Festival. BuzzFeed Books editor Arianna Rebolini, who helped curate the lineup, said that the nominated books are “generous, enlightening, and deeply felt — and have made me cry while reading on the train, which, to me, is really the hallmark of being a New York reader.†Copies of the nominated books will be made widely available across the boroughs, so you can pick up your convenient excuse for crying on the subway at a library or bookseller near you.
