Writer and director Ari Aster’s first feature, Hereditary, was dark. As in literally. The night was a constant threat and secrets hid within shadows. But in his first follow-up to that breakout hit, Aster looks like he’s bringing audiences into the bright and cleansing sunshine. In the first trailer for Midsommar, Florence Pugh arrives at some sort of festival in a dreamy bucolic setting where everyone is in flowing white garments and flower crowns and it looks like a hippie’s fantasyland. But before you know it there’s a giant bear with its intestines hanging out and talk of people being opened up to “the influence†and having their defenses broken down. What we mean to say is this definitely looks like a cult, and Pugh, Will Poulter, William Jackson Harper, and Jack Reynor are probably in a lot of trouble.
