There comes a time in every vagina-owning person’s life when they become acquainted with a special, if complicated part of their body. When they finally get involved in American politics, they lose their political virginity. Or, as Shailene Woodley casually put it to Vogue: They pop their political hymen. What?? Yes, that’s how the star of Big Little Lies describes the way Susan Sarandon called her to action.
“She said, ‘Well, we could really use you on the Bernie campaign,’†Shailene told Vogue. “At this point I didn’t know anything about politics. She was like, ‘Time to pop your political hymen and get involved.’â€
Seemingly unfazed by Sarandon’s metaphor, Shailene attended her very first rally in Michigan and became what she calls a “Bernie goddess.†Despite feeling like she “came out of the womb†politically active, Woodley credits this rally with beginning her journey through politics. It may be five years later and she may not be the “fucking crazy hippie from Hollywood†she once was, but somehow Shailene Woodley’s still the same woman who recommended sunning your vagina.
