Buried in an announcement today that producer Neal H. Moritz has renewed his overall development deal with Sony Pictures Television, Deadline reported some exciting news for horror fans. Moritz is the original producer on the I Know What You Did Last Summer movies, a property that he is currently turning into a series for Amazon, and James Wan is now attached to direct. The horror super-producer has ceded the director’s chair in the genre he’s helped mold since completing The Conjuring 2 from 2016, but has continued to shepherd his Conjuring universe at New Line through his Atomic Monster banner. Aquaman duties have been filling his directing plate for years — he’s also helming the forthcoming sequel — so it’s pretty noteworthy that he’ll come out of his unofficial sabbatical for Last Summer. Both the Insidious and Conjuring franchises maintain a distinct visual signature that was implemented by Wan in their original films, with a roving camera POV that feels like a human eye traveling through shots. Can we expect the same technique from the director in the Amazon series? Will it feel like a visual extension of his New Line properties? The news definitely give genre junkies something specific to watch out for.
