Megan Rapinoe invented soccer in the year 2019, and now Taika Waititi has invented making movies about soccer. (Deepest apologies to She’s the Man and Bend It Like Beckham for the erasure.) Variety reports that in addition to working on Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder, Waititi is making a “secret†project for Fox Searchlight, and Deadline says the movie will be based on the 2014 British soccer documentary Next Goal Wins. Directed by Mike Brett and Steve Jamison, the doc tells the story of Dutch coach Thomas Rongen and the American Samoa soccer team’s journey from being one of the world’s worst teams to qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The documentary premiered at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival, and won Best Documentary at the British Independent Film Awards that same year.
