In June 2018, Taika Waititi posted a photo of himself flipping off Hitler as a production update for his next movie, Jojo Rabbit, which he described as an “anti-fuckface satire.†Based on the novel Caging Skies by Christine Leunens, it’s about a young member of the Hitler Youth named Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis) who learns that his mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a Jewish girl in their home. Waititi, who directed the movie, also stars as Jojo’s imaginary friend, the one and only Adolf Hitler. If that’s a lot for your mind to take in, consider Waititi’s tweet from last summer where he said, “What better way to insult Hitler than having him portrayed by a Polynesian Jew?†An excellent question! The official trailer for Jojo Rabbit debuted today, and you can see Rebel Wilson as a proud Nazi child instructor, Sam Rockwell as a Nazi shooting guns, and, of course, Waititi’s führer running and dancing and dispensing advice to young Jojo. The Hitler lambasting will begin at the Toronto International Film Festival.
