December 3 is going to be a huge day for Tiffany Haddish for three big reasons. First of all, it will be the comedian’s 40th birthday. Second, she’ll be celebrating it with a bat mitzvah, since she recently learned about her Jewish heritage and wants to get more in touch with her roots (also, she used to work as a bar mitzvah “energy producer,†so she’s familiar with how to put on a great one). And, oh yeah, she’s also going to release her brand-new Netflix stand-up special that day, titled Black Mitzvah.
In a video posted to Instagram today, Haddish explained the meaning behind the special. “‘What do you mean you’re black and you’re having a bat mitzvah, Tiffany?’ Well, I don’t know if y’all know this about me, but I’m Jewish. I’m Jewish by DNA,†she says. “And because of my father, I want to honor him and our ancestors, and I want to do something that represents growth and maturity. And I want to teach. That’s what I’ve been put on this planet to do is teach, and Judaism is all about that!†This all builds up to a slightly reworked version of Haddish’s trademark catchphrase: “It’s my black mitzvah, baby! She grown, and she ready!†Watch her announcement video below:
