A Look Book Made for Nerds Like Me
Nerds everywhere: This one’s for us. For Louis Vuitton’s pre-fall look book, creative director Nicolas Ghesquière cast the brand’s muses as protagonists in their own imaginary horror and sci-fi novels. In this “wearable library,” the clothing actually tells its own stories. [Cue the melodramatic synthesizer music].
“Fashion is a novel,” the brand claims in the look-book notes. And although the faux covers and posters draw inspiration from the ’70s and ’80s, the fashion is a mash-up of past, present, and future styles. Considering that Virgil Abloh, Louis Vuitton’s artistic director for menswear, predicted that the future of fashion means “expressing your knowledge and personal style with vintage,” it makes sense for the brand’s vision as a whole.
This translates into Léa Seydoux in one of the collection’s T-shirts (with the original cover from William Peter Blatty’s 1971 novel The Exorcist) paired with a sequined cocktail dress, thick chains, and an LV-logo-covered handbag; Angelica Ross in a ’50s schoolgirl look paired with futuristic moon boots; and Jaden Smith in a colorful pattern clash fit for social-media consumption. Hopefully, all of these celebrities survive the stories, but even if they don’t, they still look really good.
