The stars are not letting a virtual ceremony get in the way of making a statement at the 2020 Emmys “red carpet.†Oscar winner turned director Regina King paid tribute to Breonna Taylor with her 2020 Emmys outfit. Under a pink pantsuit, the actress wore a T-shirt with Taylor’s face and name on it as she spoke to Live From the Red Carpet host Nina Parker about her Emmy-nominated turn in HBO’s Watchmen, which won four Creative Arts Emmys this past week. Zooming in from Santa Fe, an incredibly relaxed King never directly called attention to her shirt, but the message was loud and clear. She also revealed what she would have worn to the ceremony had it been a normal year: a high-fashion, asymmetrical, leggy blue dress. Clearly, King was prepared to make a statement with her outfit in person or virtually.
Update, Monday, September 21, at 11 a.m.: If you didn’t get King’s message, let Uzo Aduba emphasize. The Mrs. America actress also wore a Taylor T-shirt at the 2020 Emmys, while accepting the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series. Simply reading “Breonna Taylor†in gold, Aduba honored the 26-year-old aspiring nurse who was killed by police officers in her home over six months ago. The officers have yet to be charged for her murder. Aduba won for her role as historical figure Shirley Chisholm, made history as one of seven Black actors to win Emmys this year, and used her acceptance speech to try to change history. That’s powerful.
