72 Designers on Their Spring/Summer Inspirations
We’re in the middle of a New York Fashion Week unlike any other. To capture the mood of this socially distanced season, the Cut asked 72 designers to choose just one word (or phrase) and one image to describe their new collections.
This season, after spending much of the year quarantined indoors, many of the designers explored travel and the outdoors in their inspirations, evoking nature, rebirth, and images of flora and fauna. But while designers like Collina Strada, Trina Turk, and Zimmermann looked out their windows, others looked to the things we’ve come to know perhaps too well. Anna Sui was inspired by the word heartland, while others chose domesticity, introspection, and myself.
For many other designers on the list, after a summer of loss and uncertainty, it was time to gather some hope for the future. Claudia Li reflected on the phrase “Till We Meet Again …,” and Zero + Maria Cornejo recalled the place that is usually bustling right about now: New York City.
