The final trailer for Jordan Peele’s upcoming horror film, Nope, dropped on June 9, and it finally gives viewers some details about what, exactly, these characters are saying “nope†to: a big alien ship in the sky that seems to possess the ability to kill earthlings who look at it. That’s why the father of Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer’s characters drops dead off his horse and ends up with one eyeball totally obliterated. The siblings, ranchers OJ and Emerald Haywood, resolve to profit off of the UFO and capture footage of it, leading to a tragically nostalgic cameo from Fry’s Electronics. Clearly, the spaceship doesn’t want to be filmed, because it showers all kinds of plagues on the Haywoods, including giving their house a red paint job in an Overlook Hotel kind of way. We also get a bit of a better look at Steven Yeun’s spiffy cowboy huckster, making a sales pitch to an audience that gets distracted by something in the sky, presumably something Not of Planet Earth … get it?
In an earlier teaser, emphatic dissents of “yeah, nah, nah, nah. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope, mm-mm. Nah. No. No. No. No. Nope. Hell no,†from Palmer and Kaluuya punctuate the creepy score, coming in faster and faster over ominous desert imagery. We also get a good look at the spaceship that will definitely be whipping up something upsetting. You know what else is a good look? Yeun in a ten gallon hat. The 30-second teaser is subtly brilliant in how it stitches together reactions of fear, panic, and disgust, but for the most part, we don’t see what they’re reacting to, leading our imaginations to run wild between now and the film’s July 22 release date. Back in April, Peele shared footage from the film at CinemaCon and said, “I’m going to personally thrive on the number of times we hear the word ‘nope’ in the theater.†That’s gonna be a problem because we’re giving this teaser a resounding “Yep!â€
As the previously-released full trailer reveals, Kaluuya and (a very charismatic) Palmer play the owners of Hollywood’s first and only Black-owned horse training ranch. Their characters’ lives are forever changed by the presence of these otherworldly creatures. Beyond that, the trailers keep plot specifics close to the cowboy vest. In addition to Palmer, Kaluuya, and Yeun, Nope stars Michael Wincott, Brandon Perea, and Barbie Ferreira. The film hits theaters on July 22.
