It’s been a really busy couple of weeks for television awards. Typically, the Emmys take place in early fall (usually mid-September or so) but due to last year’s entertainment industry strikes, 2023’s ceremony was pushed to early January instead. The beginning of the year also brought a host of other, regularly-scheduled awards shows, like the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards.
During this awards period, any TV lovers who are on the hunt for critically acclaimed, gold-standard content have a lot to choose from: Taking a glance at the nominations and winners lists yields a slew of options to catch up on during these cold winter months. Luckily, many of this season’s buzziest television shows are available to stream on Hulu, including an abundance of award-winning comedies. The comedy series available on the service include options that offer more than just laughs — like FX’s The Bear and its heart-rate-inducing kitchen chaos, Only Murders in the Building’s murder mystery frame story, and Abbott Elementary, which contains an important perspective on the necessity of teachers and public schools. Read on for our picks on what to watch on Hulu if you’re planning to check out some award-winning comedies this month.
The Bear
It may seem unbelievable, but thanks to the aforementioned changes to the awards season calendar, the haul of Emmys that the FX original The Bear won this year was actually for its first season, which aired back in 2022. The Chicago-set kitchen drama took home 10 Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series and awards for stars Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. That trio also won Critics Choice Awards this year, and Edebiri and White took home Golden Globes statuettes as well. (The series also won Best Comedy Series and Best Television Series — Musical or Comedy at those shows.) The Bear was a breakout hit almost as soon as it premiered (and immediately added “Yes, chef!†into our collective vernacular), but it returned last year with an even better second season that ratcheted up the stakes and the guest stars. Since it’s already renewed for season three, seize this moment to catch up and see what all the hype is about. Streaming now on Hulu.
Abbott Elementary
This ABC sitcom about a lovable group of elementary school teachers and staff in Philadelphia has been nominated for a slew of different awards since its premiere in late 2021. It would take pages and pages to go through every nomination, but its wins are just as impressive: Abbott Elementary had won two Critics’ Choice Awards, three Golden Globes, and two Emmys before 2024’s award season even started, and continued that haul with star and creator Quinta Brunson’s win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy at this year’s Emmys. The series is a true ensemble piece, with fan-favorite characters including Ava, the chaotic school principal, Mr. Johnson, the eccentric janitor, and, of course, the will-they, won’t-they romance between teachers Janine and Gregory. Now is a great time to catch up on the beloved show before the third season premieres in February on ABC. Streaming now on Hulu.
Only Murders in the Building
Even if it hadn’t been nominated for a boatload of awards this season, Only Murders in the Building would still be the perfect show to catch up on right now. Its vibes are analogous to a cozy wool sweater that you reach for all winter long, or a steaming, comforting mug of cocoa. The beloved Hulu Original unites the star power of Selena Gomez with the incredible comedic duo of Steve Martin and Martin Short as the trio solves mysteries in their New York City apartment building — all while wearing a great selection of coats and turtlenecks. The series has been nominated for 12 Golden Globes over the course of three seasons, along with seven Critics’ Choice awards and an astounding 28 Emmys. (It also won an Emmy this year for production design.) All three seasons are available to stream on Hulu, and it’s already been renewed for season four. Streaming now on Hulu.
Reservation Dogs
This FX series about four Indigenous teenagers in the Muscogee Nation in rural Oklahoma was the first TV series to feature all Indigenous writers and directors, and was also one of the most critically acclaimed shows of recent years. (No, seriously: It seemed like every television critic working today recommended it.) It also received a fair amount of awards attention, getting nominated for numerous Critics’ Choice Awards, Golden Globes, and an Emmy Award as well as winning a Gotham Award and two Independent Spirit Awards (including one for Best New Scripted Series). The show just wrapped up with its third and final season, which critics have called the best of the series, so this month is the perfect time to catch up on the whole series while the awards season buzz is still going strong.
